Griffith Laboratories began making these spice sets in 1939 and they were immediately popular, and are now highly collectible. They were originally sold through the home furnishings departments of Marshall Field's, Macy's and other fine stores. Sets were sold in a variety of colors, though the red is classic.
The jars in this 10-piece set are the smaller size at 3.5" tall. The milk glass is plain and smooth, void of the deco columns found on most of the standard size jars.
The milk glass jars are free of any chips or cracks. The red metal caps are in good vintage condition with light paint wear but no major dents or flaws. The original plastic rack is still present, designed to stand upright on a counter or be mounted to a wall via the holes in the rear panel.
The fronts of the jars feature paper labels, indicating they're an early set manufactured at the beginning of Griffith's line of spice jars; the paper labels preceded the later fired-on labels. All of the front paper labels are present, with light-to-moderate wear.
Paper labels are also mounted to the backs of the jars. Eight of the 10 back paper labels are present, with light wear. The missing back paper labels are All Spice and Black Pepper.
Nine of the 10 jars still feature their original metal sifter inserts. Ground Ginger is missing its insert.
